Kyle Walker (born May 28, 1990) plays right-back for Premier League club Burnley. He is widely regarded as one of his generation’s best fullbacks due to his exceptional speed.

Walker signed for Manchester City in 2017 for £45 million. Pep Guardiola tutored him during his time at City. With City, he won six Premier League titles, four EFL Cups, two FA Cups, and a UEFA Champions League in 2023 as part of a continental treble.

He was named to the PFA Team of the Year four times: in the 2011-12, 2016-17, 2017-18, and 2023-24 seasons. He went on loan to AC Milan for the second part of the 2024-25 season before signing a permanent move with Burnley in July 2025.

Walker represented England at the under-19 and under-21 levels before making his senior national team debut in September 2011. He has represented England in three UEFA European Championships (2016, 2020, and 2024), as well as two FIFA World Cups (2018, 2022).

Kyle Andrew Walker was born on May 28, 1990, in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, and is of Jamaican origin on his father’s side. He grew up in the city’s Sharrow neighbourhood, where he attended Porter Croft Infant and Junior School before moving on to High Storrs till 2006.

Career

Walker joined his hometown club Sheffield United at the age of seven, after being recommended by coach Paul Archer at Football Unites, Racism Divides. Walker worked his way up the ranks, eventually becoming a regular in the reserve squad in 2008.

In November 2008, he was allowed to join League One club Northampton Town on a one-month loan to get first-team experience, making his debut on November 15 in a loss to Oldham Athletic. His one-month loan was extended to January 2009, when he returned to United after nine appearances for Northampton.

Walker made his first-team debut for United on January 13, 2009, against Leyton Orient in the third round of the FA Cup. With United losing several players to injury in the last weeks of the season, Walker was named to the starting lineup for the last two games, making his complete league debut for the club on April 25, 2009, against Swansea City.

After two good performances, he was retained as Sheffield United advanced to the Championship play-offs, starting both matches against Preston North End and the final against Burnley in late May 2009. Walker made history as the youngest Sheffield United player to play in a final at Wembley Stadium.

Walker joined Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur on July 22, 2009, for a combined sum of £9 million, alongside Sheffield United teammate Kyle Naughton. Walker was loaned back to United for the remainder of the 2009-10 season as part of the agreement.

While at Sheffield United, he was almost always at right-back for the first half of the season, but was suddenly recalled by Tottenham on February 1, 2010, just before the end of the January 2010 transfer window, after Alan Hutton was loaned out to Sunderland.

Walker made his Tottenham debut on March 27, in a 2-0 victory over Portsmouth, and went on to make one more league appearance that season. Walker went out on loan again at the start of the next season, signing an initial one-month contract with Queens Park Rangers due to injuries at the club’s right-back position.

In mid-October, his loan at QPR was extended until January 3, 2011. Walker left QPR and joined Premier League team Aston Villa on loan until the conclusion of the 2010-11 season.

In January 2011, he scored only nine minutes into his FA Cup debut against his previous club Sheffield United in the third round.

Walker scored his first Premier League goal and senior league goal against Fulham in early February, with a 30-yard shot into the bottom left corner of the goal.. He returned to Tottenham at the end of the 2010–11 season, having scored two goals in 18 appearances for Villa.

Walker signed a new deal with Tottenham on October 28, 2013, which would keep him at the club until June 2019. Walker played for Tottenham in the 2015 League Cup final, which was defeated 2-0 by Chelsea at Wembley Stadium on March 1.

Walker was chosen as right-back to the PFA Team of the Year for the second consecutive year on April 20, 2017. Walker signed a five-year contract with Tottenham’s Premier League rivals Manchester City on July 14, 2017, for an initial fee of £45 million, which increased to £50 million with add-ons, making it one of the most expensive football moves.

He made his debut on August 12 against Brighton & Hove Albion, and various media outlets rated him as the best player in the game. Walker was sent off for two bookable offences in his home debut against Everton.

Walker started the 2018 EFL Cup final against Arsenal on February 25 and played the entire 90 minutes as Manchester City won 3-0 to claim their first trophy of the 2017-18 season and their first overall under Pep Guardiola.

Walker also won his first trophy with Manchester City as a Premier League player. Walker started the 2019 FA Cup final against Watford on May 18, as City won their first domestic treble in English men’s football. Walker signed a new deal with City in June 2019.

Walker volunteered to play in goal for the final 10 minutes of a UEFA Champions League away encounter against Atalanta on 6 November, when substitute keeper Claudio Bravo was sent off; he did not concede and saved a free-kick as the match finished 1-1.

During the 2024-25 season, Pep Guardiola confirmed that Walker had requested to leave the club with only six months remaining on his contract. Walker signed with Serie A team AC Milan on loan until the conclusion of the 2024-25 season, with the option of making the move permanent.

On February 2, he made his Milan debut in the Derby della Madonnina against Inter Milan, which ended 1-1. Walker signed a two-year contract with newly promoted Premier League team Burnley on July 5, 2025, in a move said to be worth up to £5 million if bonuses are completed.

On August 16, 2025, he made his competitive debut against Tottenham Hotspur, losing 3-0 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Walker was chosen for England’s rescheduled UEFA Euro 2020 squad on June 1, 2021. His performances during the tournament earned him a spot on the Tournament Team, and England advanced to their first major tournament final since 1966.

He was nominated to England’s squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Walker remarked that he would “not roll out the red carpet” for Kylian Mbappé if they met in the quarterfinals. Despite England’s 2-1 loss to France, Walker was commended for winning the individual duel against Mbappé.

Walker scored his first international goal on September 9, 2023, in a 1-1 draw against Ukraine in a UEFA Euro 2024 qualifier. Walker captained England for the first time on November 20, 2023, in a 1-1 draw against North Macedonia, making him the 126th player to do so.

He was named to England’s 26-man team for the UEFA Euro 2024. Walker was chosen as England’s vice captain for the event on June 14, 2024. He started at right back in the team’s first match of the tournament, a 1-0 victory over Serbia at Gelsenkirchen.

In the second Group C match against Denmark, he assisted Harry Kane’s opening goal in the 18th minute with a deflected cross from the right flank. In the round of 16 encounter against Slovakia, Marc Guéhi flicked on Walker’s long throw-in, allowing Jude Bellingham to equalise in the 95th minute.

He finished the game carrying the captain’s armband after Kane was replaced at half-time of extra time. Walker announced his retirement from international football on March 10, 2026, having earned 96 caps in total.
