Chuck Norris (March 10, 1940–March 19, 2026) was an American martial artist, actor, and novelist. He had black belts in karate, taekwondo, Tang Soo Do, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, and judo. After serving in the United States Air Force, he won several martial arts championships before establishing his own discipline, Chun Kuk Do.
Norris began his Hollywood career as a celebrity martial arts instructor before making his film debut in The Wrecking Crew (1968). Bruce Lee, a friend and fellow martial artist, invited him to play one of the main antagonists in The Way of the Dragon (1972).
While Norris continued acting, friend and student Steve McQueen advised him to pursue it seriously. Norris played the lead part in the action flick Breaker! Breaker! (1977) produced a profit.
His second leading role, Good Guys Wear Black (1978), was a success, and he quickly rose to prominence as an action film star.
Norris authored bestselling works on martial arts, exercise, philosophy, conservative politics, Christian western fiction, self-help, and biography, in addition to writing a regular column for WorldNetDaily.

Who is Chuck Norris?
Carlos Ray “Chuck” Norris was born on March 10, 1940, in Ryan, Oklahoma, to Wilma Lee (1921-2024) and Ray Dee Norris (1918-1971), a World War II Army veteran who went on to work as a mechanic, bus driver, and truck driver.
His mother was of Irish descent, while his father had German, British, and distant Cherokee ancestry. Norris was named after his father’s preacher, Carlos Berry.
He was the oldest of three brothers, the other two being Wieland (1943-1970) and Aaron. Norris’ parents split when he was 16, and he relocated to Prairie Village, Kansas, with his mother and brothers before moving to Torrance, California, with them.
Career
Norris entered the US Air Force in 1958 as an Air Policeman (AP) and was stationed at South Korea’s Osan Air Base. There, he earned the moniker “Chuck” and began training in Tang Soo Do. After returning to the United States, he continued to work as an AP at March Air Force Base in California.
He was released from the Air Force in August 1962, with the rank of airman first class. While seeking to be a police officer in Torrance, California, he established a martial arts studio and began competing in tournaments..
In 1972, Norris played Bruce Lee’s enemy in the critically acclaimed martial arts film Way of the Dragon. The picture grossed more than HK$5.3 million at the Hong Kong box office, surpassing previous marks set by Lee’s own films, The Big Boss and Fist of Fury, and became the highest-grossing film of 1972 in Hong Kong.
The Way of the Dragon grossed an estimated $US130 million worldwide. The film is credited with propelling him to popularity.
In 1973, Norris appeared in Jonathan Kaplan’s film The Student Teachers. In 1974, actor Steve McQueen, who was his martial arts student and friend at the time, recognised his talent and pushed him to start acting training at MGM. That same year, he portrayed the primary antagonist in Lo Wei’s Yellow Faced Tiger.
Norris plays a strong drug king in San Francisco, where he rules the criminal underworld, including the police force. He is eventually confronted by a young police officer who is opposed to corruption. The film was released theatrically in the United States in 1981 as Slaughter in San Francisco.
It was noted that it was an older, low-budget film with Norris in the lead.. The picture appeared on a double-bill with other action and genre films. It was regarded as a low-budget martial arts actioner that made use of Norris’s celebrity.
Norris played a mercenary in The Expendables 2 (2012), which made more than $310 million worldwide. That same year, Norris and his wife, Gena, established CForce Bottling Co. after discovering an aquifer on their Texas ranch.

Chuck Norris Death
Norris was admitted to a Hawaii hospital in March 2026 due to a medical issue. He died on March 19, at the age of 86. His family confirmed his death on Instagram the next day.
