“When my mother had a stroke, they asked us for…” – Man shares shocking church experience, sparks reactions

A Nigerian man has stirred mixed reactions on social media after opening up about why he stopped attending church, citing personal experiences that changed his perspective over time.

In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), the man explained that many people often question his decision to stay at home instead of going to church, prompting him to finally share his reasons publicly.

According to him, his perception about church and religion shifted significantly after he relocated to Lagos.

Recounting a personal experience, he said:

“A lot of people have accused me of always staying at home and not going to church. I want to tell you the three reasons why I stopped going. Number one, competition is too much in the church.

When I came to Lagos, I was driving Spider Camry 014. I went to a church on the Island, and they told me I couldn’t park inside, while bigger cars were allowed in.”

He also alleged that some churches place more emphasis on money than compassion, sharing a painful experience involving his mother’s illness.

According to him, his mother suffered a stroke, and the family struggled financially to cater for her medical needs.

However, instead of receiving support, they were reportedly pressured over unpaid tithes.

“You won’t believe pastors were calling us that we hadn’t paid tithe when my mother was sick. At some point, if we didn’t bring money, they wouldn’t even pray for us. That was when I realised something was wrong.” he added.

While some users sympathised with his story and criticised certain practices in churches, others urged people not to generalise, emphasizing that there are still genuine places of worship focused on faith and compassion.
