“What’s an achievement without…?” – Lady shares painful experience with father over marriage pressure

A Nigerian lady has sparked intense conversations online after opening up about her strained relationship with her father over marriage.
In a viral video shared on X (formerly Twitter), she recalled a traumatic experience from her university days.
According to her, while she was in her 300 level, her father beat her to stupor after discovering she had a boyfriend.
“That was the first time he ever laid his hands on me. The beating was so intense that I cried from morning until the next day,” she said.
Years later, in 2024, as she prepared to travel to Canada, her mother relayed her father’s concerns.
According to her, he questioned whether she would now do her wedding on Zoom and asked if she was involved with any man.
In 2025, she reached out to her father that she had paid her first-year school fees abroad by herself, expecting encouragement or acknowledgment of her achievement.
Instead, she said the conversation took a hurtful turn.
“All these achievements you are acquiring without a man, it’s nothing,” her father reportedly told her.
Shocked by the remark after the way he reacted years back, she said she responded, “Without which man? What are you saying? Please don’t say it to my ear again.”
According to her, her father insisted that he and her mother were only trying to ‘help her life,’ adding that regardless of her accomplishments, she would “still end up with a man.”
Her story has since triggered widespread debate online.
One user wrote, “Asking her about marriage, when you scolded her when she had a boyfriend.” Another commented, “Beating your child over having a boyfriend is abuse, not discipline.”
