What I did after my brother gave civil service job slot to his wife instead of me – Lady

A woman has sparked heated debate on social media after revealing why she stopped speaking to her brother over a civil service job opportunity.
The woman said the fallout began after her brother gave the available job slot to his wife instead of her, a decision she found unfair.
Job Slot Sparks Family Rift
In a post shared on X, formerly Twitter, the woman explained that her sister-in-law has only eight years left before retirement.
She added that she completed her National Youth Service Corps programme two years ago and still has over 30 years ahead in public service.
The woman wrote: “I stopped talking to my only brother because he gave the civil service job slot to his wife instead of me.
“She has just 8 years left before retirement, while I finished NYSC 2 years ago and still have 30+ years ahead in the service.
“My brother said they only gave him one slot. Now, my husband is telling me I must either make peace with my brother or forget about him.”
Netizens Share Mixed Reactions
The post quickly went viral, with many users expressing different views on the family dispute.
Sassy wrote: “Then she should forget about the husband. What level of audacity is that? Who gave him the authority over how she chooses to deal with her emotions regarding anyone?”
Mcanthony wrote: “Emotions aside…your brother’s wife comes first in hierarchy. Even in laws of succession, the spouse comes first.
“Then your husband shouldn’t meddle with family in that way. He shouldn’t make you choose between anything…he should drop his advice and let you be the decider.”
Felix wrote: “You need to put yourself in your brother’s shoes. Even if she had eight years, you wouldn’t blame him for his decision. She is his wife, and she is his first priority. Whatever income she earns over those eight years will contribute to supporting your brother’s household.
“You need to let it go and make peace with your brother; otherwise, you may carry this baggage into your new relationship. And mark my words, if you eventually marry, a similar situation may present itself in another form, and you may come to appreciate your brother’s decision more.”
MrEva said: “Your brother gave the slot to his wife which is wise also considering his own family first. You know the children will be trained too. The bitterness that made you stop talking to your brother shows you are not a good person. Your husband that told you to make peace with ur brother is a very good man, repent and make peace with your brother.”
Israel added: “This is really painful and your feelings are valid. Anyone in your position would feel hurt. But cutting off your only brother completely may cost you more emotionally in the long run. You can keep boundaries without burning the bridge.”
The debate continues online, with many weighing family loyalty against fairness and personal expectations.
