“We’re not criminals” – FG responds to Ghanaians calling for Nigerians’ deportation

The Federal Government (FG) has reacted to a viral video showing a protest in Ghana, where some citizens called for the deportation of Nigerians, accusing them of criminal activities.
The video, which has sparked widespread concern, captured protesters claiming that some Nigerians in Ghana are involved in crimes and should be sent back home.
Reacting to the development, the Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, condemned the generalisation, calling it “unfair and dangerous.”
She said, “Nigerians are not criminals. They are good ambassadors wherever they find themselves. The bad eggs should be identified and dealt with, not used to judge the rest.”
Dabiri-Erewa stressed that while some individuals might be guilty of wrongdoing, the majority of Nigerians living in Ghana are peaceful and law-abiding.
She urged Ghanaians and Nigerians to remain calm and avoid violence, saying the matter was being handled through diplomatic channels.
She also warned against spreading unverified claims, especially the rumour that Nigerians’ shops and properties were being destroyed in Ghana.
“There is no evidence to support those videos. Let’s avoid anything that could cause tension or reprisals,” she added.
The NIDCOM boss commended the efforts of Ghanaian and Nigerian High Commissions and confirmed that the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs is already in contact with Ghanaian authorities to manage the situation.
