“We’re done being used by politicians” — Alleged political thugs cry out

A viral video circulating on social media has sparked fresh debate about the role of alleged political thugs in Nigeria’s electoral process, after a group openly threatened to withdraw their support over what they described as neglect by politicians.

In the footage, one of the men, visibly angry, accused politicians of exploiting them for political gains without offering meaningful rewards or long-term benefits.

Threat to Boycott Political Activities

In his outburst, the man declared that they were no longer willing to be used, unless their demands were met.

We’re done being used by politicians! Tell me, which politician has ever sent us to Mecca or even given us a car? If they don’t pay us ₦40 million, we’re walking away for good. Let them use their own children for their dirty work now!” he said.

His statement has since gone viral, drawing mixed reactions from Nigerians who expressed concern about the continued involvement of youths in political violence and manipulation.

Mixed Reactions from the Public

Many social media users criticised the mindset displayed in the video, arguing that the focus remains on personal gain rather than national development.

Olamilekan also shared a similar view, saying, “It’s still all about ‘Self’ not Us… if they give you the 40million e go still finish, but if we all stand for the purpose of the entire country, then we will all benefits from it. The main problem of this nation is ‘Self’, if you do not change this mentality then nothing can change.”

However, some users appeared to sympathise with the speaker, pointing to broader issues of poor governance and lack of basic amenities.

Ademola wrote, “He’s right, those people are using us, we did not benefit anything from them no electricity and other things so what is the purpose of us doing this and working hard for them to be in a position where citizens we not benefit from them.”

Goddy added, “The eyes are finally opening! 👁️ While they’re sending their kids to Ivy League schools with our collective sweat, they’re giving the ‘street’ ₦5k and a bottle of gin to cause chaos. If the job is so ‘patriotic,’ let them hand the 2-by-2 planks to their own sons in London.”
