“We Nigerians support and stand with Iran” — Nigerian Muslims protest U.S. and Israel over killing of Iran’s Supreme leader

Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), a Shiite Muslim community organisation, took to the streets in several northern states — including Niger and Kano — to protest the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei by joint U.S.–Israeli airstrikes.

The demonstrators marched with Iranian flags and portraits of Khamenei, condemning the strikes and expressing solidarity with Iran, chanting slogans against the U.S. and Israel.

The protests were largely peaceful but marked by deep emotion and chants denouncing what participants described as foreign aggression.

Authorities in some states placed security on alert in response to the demonstrations, urging calm and restraint amid heightened tensions.

Regional and global reactions to Khamenei’s reported death

The killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, confirmed by Iranian state media and multiple international outlets, marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran.

Beyond Nigeria, protests have also erupted in other countries with sizable Shia Muslim populations — including Pakistan, Iraq, and India’s Kashmir region — where demonstrators condemned the strikes and demanded an end to Western intervention.

Security concerns and broader geopolitical implications

The demonstrations highlight wider concerns about stability in the Middle East and beyond.

Nigeria’s northern states, home to significant Muslim communities, have seen calls for peace even as activists express solidarity with Iran, illustrating how global geopolitical events can resonate deeply at the local level.

Authorities have increased security readiness as protests continue amid calls for dignified expression and caution.

Coverage continues to evolve as more details emerge about both the reported death of Khamenei and ongoing international reactions.
