“We must confront them” — Sowore blasts APC politicians as Tinubu signs Electoral Act into law

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has strongly criticised the newly signed Electoral Act 2026 (Amendment) Bill, describing it as a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.

His reaction followed the decision of President Bola Tinubu to assent to the amended electoral law on Wednesday at the State House in Abuja.

The signing came barely 24 hours after the National Assembly passed the bill after months of deliberation, reviews and amendments by both chambers.

Sowore Raises Alarm Over New Electoral Law

In a strongly worded statement, Sowore accused the president of endorsing a law he believes could weaken the credibility of future elections.

“Tinubu has now signed the 2026 ‘Electoral Act,’ a law designed to undermine and ultimately forbid free, fair, and credible elections in Nigeria,” he said.

He further called on Nigerians to oppose what he described as a direct attack on democratic values.

We must resist this assault on democracy. They have dared the people. Now we must confront them, WE must damn their impunity,” Sowore added.

His remarks have since sparked fresh debate across social media and political circles, with supporters and critics offering differing interpretations of the amendment.

Signing Ceremony at the State House

According to official reports, the president signed the bill into law around 5:00 pm on Wednesday.

The ceremony took place at the State House, Abuja, in the presence of top leaders of the National Assembly.

Although details of the amendments are yet to be fully released to the public, the legislation reportedly followed extensive consultations and revisions before its final passage.
