WCQs: Osimhen, Lookman, Dessers headline Super Eagles 23-man squad

Head coach Eric Chelle, has released the final 23-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying fixtures against Rwanda and South Africa.
The list features a mix of established internationals and rising prospects, as the Super Eagles push to secure vital points in their bid to return to football’s grandest stage.
Veteran defender William Troost-Ekong has been handed the captain’s armband, leading a defensive line that includes Calvin Bassey, Ola Aina, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Bruno Onyemaechi, Chidozie Awaziem, Felix Agu, and Benjamin Fredericks.
Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali retains his spot between the sticks, supported by Amas Obasogie and Adeleye Adebayo.
In midfield, Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi, Frank Onyeka, Raphael Onyedika, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, and Christantus Uche will provide balance, creativity, and defensive stability.
The attack is spearheaded by Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon, Cyriel Dessers, and Tolu Arokodare.
The final squad saw notable omissions, with Sadiq Umar, Victor Boniface, Terem Moffi, Nathan Tella, and Akor Adams missing out despite being part of the 31-man provisional list.
However, they remain on standby in case of injuries or tactical reshuffles.
The team will open camp in Uyo ahead of their home clash with Rwanda on Saturday, September 6, at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.
They will then travel to Bloemfontein to face South Africa on Tuesday, September 9, in a fixture that could prove decisive in shaping the group standings.
