Van Dijk admits Liverpool ‘gave up’ in Man City loss

Virgil van Dijk has issued a blunt apology to supporters after Liverpool’s heavy FA Cup exit, admitting the team “gave up” during their 4-0 defeat to Manchester City.

Liverpool’s resistance unravelled rapidly around half-time, with City scoring four goals in a dominant spell that exposed defensive frailties and a lack of resilience.

“I can only apologise to the fans for what we have shown, especially the second half,” Van Dijk said.

“The opposite happens and to come back from 3-0 is obviously very difficult here – but also you shouldn’t give up and that’s maybe, at a certain point, what happened.”

The Dutch defender conceded that the team’s response after going behind fell below standard.

“We let our fans down, we let ourselves down, and the manager,” he added.
“The way we played in the second half, especially, must hurt for everyone.”

Van Dijk was also directly involved in the turning point, conceding the penalty that allowed Erling Haaland to open the scoring before completing his hat-trick.

Focus shifts to Champions League

The defeat leaves Liverpool with their hopes of silverware resting solely on the Champions League, increasing pressure ahead of a crucial clash with Paris Saint-Germain.

Van Dijk acknowledged the scale of the challenge, stressing the need for an immediate response.

“The matter of fact is now, PSG are waiting for us… it will be so tough again. So we have to be ready mentally as soon as possible.”

Pressure builds on Slot

The result intensifies scrutiny on manager Arne Slot, despite last season’s league success. However, Van Dijk insisted responsibility lies with the players as much as the coaching staff.

“It’s a together thing… we are the ones on the pitch that have to do it.”

With momentum slipping at a decisive stage of the campaign, Liverpool now face a narrow path to salvage their season, with no margin for further lapses.
