“Valentine’s Day is not National Girlfriend Reward Day, gifts shouldn’t be one-way traffic” — Man says

A fresh debate over Valentine’s Day expectations has erupted online after a Facebook user, identified as Ralf, criticised what he described as one-sided gift culture in relationships.
His reaction followed a viral story shared on Gistreel.com, where a man advised his security guard to end his relationship ahead of Valentine’s Day due to financial pressure.
According to the story, the security guard had confided in his employer that he was broke and worried about buying a gift for his expectant girlfriend.
The employer reportedly suggested a break-up to avoid embarrassment. The guard later followed the advice and ended the relationship.
Ralf Questions Valentine’s Day Expectations
Reacting to the development, Ralf said he would “skip the spiritual angle” and focus on what he believes Valentine’s Day truly represents.
“Permit me to skip the spiritual angle…” he began. “Valentine’s Day is about love, not National Girlfriend Reward Day.”
He argued that if love is being celebrated, it should be mutual rather than transactional. According to him, gift-giving should not feel like an obligation placed on one partner alone.
“Gifts shouldn’t be a one-way traffic where one person is Santa Claus and the other is just the Post Office receiving parcels,” he wrote.
Ralf added that love should not resemble a paid service sustained by only one partner.
“Love is not a subscription service where only one party pays annually.”
He further stated that those expecting expensive gifts such as flowers, perfumes, wigs and dinner dates should also come prepared with something meaningful in return.
“If you’re expecting flowers, perfumes, wigs, and dinner dates, at least come prepared with something more than Thank you baby 🥺❤️.”
He concluded by urging couples to celebrate love in a balanced way.
“Celebrate love properly — both sides give, both sides receive. Anything else is just billing for simps.”
