“Until we enforce consequences, kidnapping won’t stop” — Man calls for stricter punishment

A man has called for stricter enforcement of punishment for crimes such as kidnapping in Nigeria, arguing that weak consequences and poor public accountability are fuelling rising criminal activities.

The remarks, which surfaced in a recent public conversation, highlighted concerns about parenting, justice delivery, and the broader societal impact of crime.

Concerns over parenting and accountability

The speaker criticised what was described as poor disciplinary approaches in some homes, warning that failure to instil consequences in children could lead to future criminal behaviour.

He argued that both family upbringing and societal enforcement of laws play critical roles in shaping responsible citizens.

When a child misbehaves and faces no real consequences, what the mother is doing is breeding a criminal that could grow up to destroy lives or become a disgrace to the family,” he said.

Call for stricter enforcement of laws

He further stressed that Nigeria already has laws guiding punishment for serious crimes but questioned the lack of transparency and enforcement, especially in kidnapping cases.

According to him, making consequences more visible could serve as a deterrent to others.

We have a constitution that governs this country, but we don’t see its full execution. Kidnapping carries serious punishment, yet we don’t hear what happens to those caught. Until consequences are enforced and seen, others will continue to see it as a profitable venture,” he added.

He also cited past incidents of kidnapping victims suffering long-term trauma, noting that survivors rarely return to normal life, underscoring the severity of the crime and the need for decisive action.
