‘United need bigger manager’ – Keane pours cold water on Carrick talk after Arsenal win

Roy Keane has dismissed suggestions that Michael Carrick should be considered for the Manchester United job on a permanent basis, despite the club’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Arsenal on Sunday.

Keane rejects permanent role idea

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Super Sunday coverage after the match, Keane shut down a proposal from Micah Richards that Carrick could be handed the role full-time.

“The job? No, you’re being silly now,” Keane said. “Yeah, two great performances… anyone can win two games. It’s what he does at the end of the season. Even if they do get into fourth, I still wouldn’t be convinced that he’s the man for the job. Absolutely not.

“I still think they need a bigger and better manager.”

Keane did, however, acknowledge Carrick’s impact since stepping in following Ruben Amorim’s dismissal earlier this month.

“He’s got the opportunity, what a chance it is for him, and he’s taking it, so fair play to him,” he added.

Carrick focused on the present

Carrick, who has overseen back-to-back wins and remains unbeaten in charge, played down speculation about his future.

“I’m enjoying it. It’s a fantastic position to be in,” he told reporters.
“What happens next I’m not going to be answering it every week. I’m enjoying it and I’ll continue to do what I can.”

United’s emirates comeback

United climbed into fourth place with a memorable win at the Emirates. Arsenal took the lead when Lisandro Martinez turned the ball into his own net, but Bryan Mbeumo equalised after intercepting a loose pass and rounding David Raya.

Patrick Dorgu put United ahead early in the second half with a powerful volley, before Mikel Merino levelled late on. The decisive moment arrived minutes later when Matheus Cunha curled a superb effort past Raya to seal the win.

United host Fulham next as Carrick continues his interim spell with momentum firmly on his side.
