Ukraine vs Denmark: Eriksen stable after collapse halts friendly

Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen is conscious and in stable condition after collapsing during a friendly match against Ukraine in Odense, with officials confirming he was able to leave the pitch under his own power before being taken for further medical evaluation.

The match was stopped in the 65th minute following the incident and was later abandoned. Medical staff quickly attended to the 34-year-old, who regained consciousness shortly after the collapse.

Eriksen, who has an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) fitted after suffering a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, was immediately assessed on the pitch before being transported to hospital for further checks.

Medical update and immediate response

The Danish Football Association confirmed that Eriksen’s condition stabilised shortly after the incident.

“Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself,” said Denmark national team doctor Morten Boesen.

“As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should. He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him.”

“He will now undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident.”

Boesen added: “We are in ongoing contact with him and the doctors at the hospital. But Christian is doing well, and he asked me to send his regards to all the players and tell them that he was OK.”

The ICD device was installed after Eriksen’s collapse during a match against Finland in 2021, an episode that temporarily halted his career and triggered extensive medical intervention.

Career context and club background

Following his recovery, Eriksen resumed professional football with Brentford in 2022 before moving on to Manchester United, where he spent three seasons.

He later joined VfL Wolfsburg in 2025 and featured regularly during the 2025–26 Bundesliga campaign, making 34 appearances.

Prior to his recent club spells, Eriksen also played for Tottenham Hotspur, where he established himself as one of Europe’s most creative midfielders.

The midfielder was earning his 151st international cap at the time of the incident. Neither Denmark nor Ukraine qualified for the upcoming World Cup, which begins this week.

Medical assessments are ongoing as officials work to determine the cause of the collapse, with Denmark’s team management maintaining close communication with hospital staff.
