UCL: Valverde hat-trick puts Real Madrid in control against Man City

Federico Valverde produced a stunning first-half hat-trick to give Real Madrid advantage over Manchester City in their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 clash.
City now face a daunting task to keep their Champions League hopes alive after Valverde’s clinical performance punished defensive lapses from Pep Guardiola’s side.
Valverde punishes City defensive errors
Real Madrid entered the match without several key attacking options, including Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham and long-term absentee Rodrygo.
However, the Spanish giants still had enough quality to exploit City’s defensive weaknesses.
Manchester City initially started brightly and created a few early moments of pressure before Real struck first in the 20th minute.

Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois launched a long pass over the defence which caught Nico O’Reilly out of position, allowing Valverde to round Gianluigi Donnarumma and score from a tight angle.
Brilliant hat-trick seals first-leg control
Valverde doubled Madrid’s lead just seven minutes later, finishing low across Donnarumma to give the hosts firm control of the contest.
The Uruguayan then completed a superb hat-trick with an inventive piece of skill, collecting a lofted through-ball before cleverly lifting it over Marc Guéhi in a tight space and volleying past the City goalkeeper.
Real had a chance to extend their advantage shortly after the hour mark when Donnarumma brought down Vinícius Júnior in the box.
However, the Italian redeemed himself by saving the penalty with a strong dive to his left.
City almost pulled one back soon after when O’Reilly pounced on a loose ball in the area, but Courtois reacted quickly to block the effort with an outstretched leg.
Despite the missed chances, Real Madrid remain in control of the tie heading into the second leg.
