Uche Pedro (Uchenna Jennifer Eze), who is from the eastern region of Nigeria, was born on July 26, 1984. Uche Pedro finished her primary and secondary school in Nigeria before relocating to Canada. In 2006, she got a Bachelor of Business Administration with honours from Western University’s Ivey Business School.

She studied at Stanford University Graduate School of Business for the Seed Transformation Program at the Stanford Institute for Innovation in Developing Economies from 2016 to 2017. She later went on to get a Master of Public Administration from Harvard Kennedy School, where she graduated as a Ford Foundation Mason Fellow in 2020.

Career

Uche has worked for Shell Canada, the Cadbury Middle East and Africa Unit in the United Kingdom, and Cadbury Nigeria. In July 2006, she established BellaNaija.

She stated that the idea for BellaNaija occurred while she was studying at a university in Canada, where she had a two-week vacation and quickly became bored. When she first arrived in Nigeria and saw the developing advancements in fashion, entertainment, and business, she was motivated to start something that reflected the country’s dynamic young atmosphere.

Uche is a TEDGlobal Fellow and an associate of the Nigeria Leadership Initiative. Uche recognised the potential of what she was building and proceeded to establish the firm. Registering a parent company, BainStone Limited, is a step towards a commercial organization.

BainStone Limited focuses on creating and managing unique and interesting internet media content for Africans. The company was one of 50 high-potential SMEs chosen and received a British Airways Opportunity Grant.

In 2013, Uche was named the British Council International Young Media Entrepreneur of the Year for Nigeria. In 2014 and 2015, Forbes Magazine Online named Uche one of Africa’s 30 Most Promising Young Entrepreneurs. In December 2015, she was named one of Ventures Africa’s Most Influential CEOs of 2015, New African Woman’s Women of the Year for 2015, and Quartz’s List of 30 African Innovators.

In 2016, she was named African Blogger of the Year at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards. In 2017, Uche was invited to the first-ever Obama Foundation Summit as a civic leader making a difference in the world, and took part in the Stanford Seed Transformation Programme.

Uche was featured in the annual OkayAfrica100 Women campaign in February 2018, which honours remarkable women from Africa and the diaspora who are creating waves in a variety of professions while also having a good effect in their communities and the world. Uche was chosen to participate in Bill & Melinda Gates’ 2018 campaign.

Uche Pedro was invited to the Obama Foundation Summit, a two-day gathering of around 500 civic leaders from around the world. The BellaNaija team completed the Stanford Seed Transformation Program in 2017, a 12-month programme that challenges high-potential leaders to evaluate their companies’ vision and clarify strategy.

Uche is deeply committed to positively impacting her community and fostering the next generation. She is the founder of #BNDoGood, an effect-driven project that continually supports a diverse range of non-profits and social impact groups, including LEAP Africa, Slum2School, Django Girls, Junior Achievement Nigeria, and many others.

In November 2018, Uche earned the ELOY Award for Innovation/Invention, which is given to a woman who has used her expertise to discover new methods to tackle problems and invented solutions to various challenges.

In addition, she received a Frown Award from UNFPA/UNICEF for her work to preserve the rights of all girls and her commitment to the abolition of female genital mutilation (FGM) in Nigeria. Uche hosted the TEDxLagos Spotlight event in August 2018.

The Launch of BellaNaija.com

Every time Uche visited Nigeria on vacation, she couldn’t help but notice the growing improvements in fashion, entertainment, and business. She thought it would be wonderful to share these changes with the rest of the world, so she started blogging.

For her, it began as a hobby in which she scanned magazine articles, photos, and interviews and posted them. She had no idea she was about to transform Nigeria’s fashion and entertainment industries.

BellaNaija launched as a free platform (www.bellanaija.blogspot.com) on July 1, 2006, before transitioning to bellanaija.com. When the site began receiving millions of visitors each month, Uche realised the potential of what she was creating and went on to organise the business.

Uche Pedro organised the firm by forming a parent company, BainStone Limited. BainStone Limited focuses on creating and managing unique and interesting internet media content for Africans. The company was one of 50 high-potential SMEs chosen and received a British Airways Opportunity Grant.

BellaNaija.com is now one of Nigeria’s most popular sites, with millions of visitors each month and a large revenue stream from Google Adsense, direct ads, sponsored posts, and wedding features.

Uche Pedro has been developing and expanding the BellaNaija brand, as well as ‘productizing’ various brand parts, such as BellaNaijaStyle.com. The Bellanaija brand achieved remarkable feats last year, and worthy of attention is their partnership with the United Nations Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights for International Women’s Day, 2017, to raise awareness about issues impacting women in Africa.

Uche Pedro was invited to the Obama Foundation Summit, a two-day gathering of around 500 civic leaders from around the world. The BellaNaija team completed the Stanford Seed Transformation Program in 2017, a 12-month program that challenges high-potential leaders to evaluate their companies’ vision and clarify strategy.
