Troost-Ekong stranded in Qatar amid Gulf airspace shutdown

William Troost-Ekong is among several foreign-based players currently unable to leave Qatar after rising military tensions between Iran and Israel led to widespread airspace closures across parts of the Gulf.

The defender, who recently joined Al Ahli SC in the Qatar Stars League, has reportedly been stranded following security measures that suspended flights and halted sporting activities.

Authorities in Qatar confirmed their air defence systems intercepted incoming missiles as tensions escalated in the region.

Flights suspended, football halted

Regional reports indicated missile exchanges across multiple countries, prompting Qatar and neighbouring states to temporarily shut their airspace. The move left residents, travellers and professional athletes unable to depart while security assessments continue.

League matches and training sessions have been paused indefinitely as officials prioritise public safety.

Troost-Ekong had only recently begun his tenure with Al Ahli after a January transfer from Saudi Arabia, with expectations he would anchor the club’s defence.

Other prominent players based in Qatar, including Marco Verratti, Philippe Coutinho and Julian Draxler, are also affected by the shutdown.

Super Eagles plans in doubt

The disruption extends beyond club football. Nigeria’s national team, the Nigeria national football team, are scheduled to face Iran in a four-nation invitational tournament in Amman, Jordan, during the March international window.

The fixture, organised under the supervision of the Nigeria Football Federation, was set for March 27 at the Amman International Stadium.

Escalating tensions have cast uncertainty over Iran’s participation, though tournament organisers have yet to confirm any changes. Discussions between federations and FIFA are expected.

Head coach Eric Chelle recently confirmed preparations were underway for the matches against Iran and Jordan. However, with travel restrictions and security concerns ongoing, those plans may now be subject to revision pending further developments in the region.
