Troost-Ekong set to quit Super Eagles before AFCON 2025
Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong is reportedly considering ending his international career after Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to journalist MikeThePundit, Ekong told teammates after the shootout loss to DR Congo that he might step away from the squad.
Dressing-room hint at exit
The defender was quoted as saying, “I will watch you as a fan at the AFCON,” signalling a potential retirement ahead of the December 2025 tournament.
Ekong has not started a competitive match since Nigeria’s 2-1 win over Lesotho. In recent months, Wilfred Ndidi has captained the side, while 20-year-old Benjamin Fredrick has emerged as the team’s standout defensive prospect.
Rising star takes centre stage
Fredrick earned his first competitive cap in September and has since cemented a starting role.
His calm display against Rwanda and strong performances in the World Cup playoffs have strengthened his position as Nigeria’s next defensive leader.
Ekong, who debuted in 2015 and captained Nigeria to the 2023 AFCON final, may now make way for a new generation. If he retires, his departure would mark a major shift in the Super Eagles’ leadership core.
