Tottenham open talks to sign departing Liverpool star on free transfer

Tottenham Hotspur are in advanced negotiations to sign Andy Robertson on a free transfer this summer following confirmation of his impending exit from Liverpool.

The 32-year-old left-back is set to leave Anfield after nine years when his contract expires, prompting renewed interest from Spurs, who previously attempted to secure his signature during the January window.

Talks progressing, but survival will be a key factor

Discussions between both parties are understood to be at an advanced stage, although a full agreement has not yet been finalised.

However, the proposed move is heavily dependent on Tottenham retaining their Premier League status.

Currently 18th in the table, they sit two points behind West Ham United in the race for survival.

Failure to avoid relegation could derail the deal, given the financial and sporting implications of dropping out of the top flight.

De Zerbi targets experience

Spurs new manager Roberto De Zerbi is pushing for experienced additions ahead of his first full season in charge, with Robertson viewed as a strategic acquisition to strengthen leadership within the squad.

The Scotland captain brings significant pedigree, having been a key figure during Liverpool’s recent period of domestic and European success.

Romero injury adds urgency

Spurs’ defensive concerns have intensified following confirmation that Cristian Romero will miss the remainder of the season due to a knee injury sustained in the recent defeat to Sunderland.

The 27-year-old centre-back was forced off after a collision with goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky and is now ruled out for the club’s final six fixtures.

His absence also raises concerns over his availability for Argentina’s upcoming World Cup campaign.
