Tottenham face relegation threat in 2-1 home defeat against Newcastle

Jacob Ramsey scored the decisive goal as Newcastle United secured a rare away victory with a 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur, easing pressure on head coach Eddie Howe while deepening concerns around Spurs boss Thomas Frank.
Both managers came into the Premier League clash under heavy criticism following poor runs.
Tottenham were still searching for their first league win of 2026, while Newcastle had managed just one victory in eight matches across all competitions. On the night, it was Howe’s side who responded.
Newcastle strike first before the break
Newcastle took the lead in first-half stoppage time through an unlikely source.
Defender Malick Thiaw reacted quickest after Guglielmo Vicario parried his initial header from Anthony Elanga’s cross, stabbing home from close range to put the visitors ahead.

The goal rewarded Newcastle’s discipline, especially as they lined up without a recognised striker, and gave them control heading into the interval.
Spurs rally briefly after restart
Tottenham showed greater urgency after the break and drew level from their first corner of the match.
Xavi Simons’ delivery was nodded back across goal by Pape Matar Sarr, allowing Archie Gray to hook the ball into the net and ignite the home crowd.
The equaliser sparked a short-lived surge from Spurs, but their inability to sustain pressure soon showed.
Ramsey delivers decisive moment
Newcastle regained the lead when Anthony Gordon drove into the penalty area and found Ramsey, who guided a composed first-time finish into the bottom corner.
It was the midfielder’s first goal for the club since his summer move from Aston Villa.
Despite late pressure, Newcastle held firm to secure only their third away league win of the season.
The victory lifts them to 10th place and provides Howe with a timely boost, while Tottenham slip to 16th, with frustration among the home support once again evident.
