Toke Makinwa is a highly influential Nigerian radio presenter, television host, YouTuber, lifestyle entrepreneur, and author. She is well-known for hosting The Morning Drive on radio station “Rhythm 93.7 FM” and for her YouTube vlog series “Toke Moments”. She published her book On Becoming four years ago, in November of 2016.

Toke Makinwa was born on 3 November 1984 in Lagos State, Nigeria. Makinwa lost both of her parents in a gas explosion when she was 8 years old. She attended Federal Government Girls’ College in Oyo State and later enrolled at the University of Lagos, where she got a BA in English and Literature.

Career

Makinwa made her significant media debut as co-host of The Morning Drive on Rhythm 93.7 FM in 2010. In 2012, she appeared on television as host of the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria (MBGN) beauty contest, which was televised live throughout Nigeria. She co-hosted Flytime TV’s 3 Live Chicks alongside Tosyn Bucknor and Oreka Godis.

The show began as a web series, then expanded to terrestrial television in late 2012. Makinwa did not renew her contract with Flytime TV for the show’s second season, and she was replaced by Omalicha, her radio colleague. Makinwa started her YouTube vlog series, Toke Moments, in 2012.

In 2013, she received the Nigeria Broadcasters Award for Outstanding Female Presenter of the Year and was nominated for Radio OAP of the Year at the Nigeria Entertainment Awards. That same year, she was appointed an ambassador for Nigeria’s United Africa Company. In January 2014, Hip Hop World Magazine named Makinwa the host of its chat program Trending. She also landed a slot as a co-host on EbonyLife TV’s flagship show Moments.

Makinwa has hosted various significant events, including the 2013 The Future Awards Africa and the 2014 Headies Awards. Makinwa and actress Nancy Isime co-hosted The Voice Nigeria’s third season in March 2021. In October 2021, she presented Season 12 of Gulder Ultimate Search.

In November 2021, she launched her chat program, Chat with Toke Makinwa, on MultiChoice. Makinwa starred as Louise in the 2022 film Glamour Girls, directed by Bunmi Adesoye and Abimbola Craig. Makinwa published her memoir On Becoming in November 2016, which details her personal problems as well as her ex-husband Maje Ayida’s treachery. Makinwa went on a book tour to promote the book, making visits in Nigeria, the United Kingdom, South Africa, the United States, and portions of East Africa.

Makinwa established her namesake handbag collection, Toke Makinwa Luxury, in 2017. In 2018, she also created Glow by TM, a skincare product. Makinwa was named an ambassador for Nigeria’s United Africa Company in 2013, alongside Osas Ighodaro, Dare Art Alade, and Dan Foster.  She signed a multi-million naira contract with Nestlé Nigeria and became the face of the Maggi brand.

In 2016, she was named Mecran Cosmetics’ brand ambassador, and she also represents Payporte and Ciroc. Makinwa agreed to an endorsement arrangement with Oppo Mobile in November 2019. In 2021, she will host season 6 of The Buzz, which airs on Showmax Naija.

Is Toke Makinwa Husband?

She married Maje Ayida on January 15, 2014, after being in a relationship with him for eight years. She separated from Ayida in 2015 after discovering that he had gotten his ex-girlfriend pregnant. On October 5, 2017, a Lagos High Court dissolved Makinwa’s marriage to Ayida because Ayida had committed adultery. Makinwa revealed that she lost her older sister when Big Brother Naija season 6 finished. Makinwa gave birth to her first child, a girl, in August 2025. Earlier that month, she revealed her baby bump in a social media post.
