Tinubu to address Nigerians on October 1 as Nigeria marks 66th Independence anniversary

President Bola Tinubu is set to address Nigerians in a nationwide broadcast on October 1, 2026, as the country marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.

The Federal Government announced the planned broadcast as it inaugurated an Inter Ministerial Committee to coordinate activities for this year’s Independence celebration.

The committee held its inaugural meeting on Thursday, with officials outlining the programme leading to the October 1 anniversary.

FG plans low key Independence celebration

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, said the anniversary would provide an opportunity to reflect on the contributions and sacrifices of Nigeria’s founding fathers and heroines.

Akume, who was represented at the meeting by Permanent Secretary Bekearedebo Augusta Warrens, also said the celebration would highlight the administration’s reforms and efforts to reposition the country amid ongoing socio economic challenges.

However, the SGF directed the committee to ensure that this year’s activities remain low key, while urging members to work with urgency because of the limited time before October 1.

Tinubu’s Independence Day broadcast

The planned nationwide broadcast means Nigerians are expected to hear directly from President Tinubu on Independence Day as part of the official anniversary programme.

The development has drawn attention to what the President may address during the broadcast, particularly as the country prepares to mark another year of independence.

In 2025, Tinubu also delivered a nationwide Independence Day address in which he spoke about Nigeria’s progress, economic reforms and the challenges facing citizens.
