Tinubu awards D’Tigress with $100,000 each for Afrobasket victory

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has honoured Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, with national awards and generous cash rewards following their historic victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket Championship.

During a reception held on Monday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu conferred national honours on the championship-winning squad and announced a cash gift of $100,000 for each player, with $50,000 awarded to each member of the technical crew for their crucial role in the team’s success.

The President commended D’Tigress for their unwavering discipline, resilience, and exemplary representation of Nigeria on the international stage. He described the team as “inspiring role models for Nigerian youth” and a shining symbol of national unity and pride.

D’Tigress clinched the 2025 title by defeating arch-rivals Mali in a fiercely contested final, marking Nigeria’s fourth consecutive Afrobasket championship and further cementing their dominance in African women’s basketball.

The President’s recognition comes as a significant morale boost for the team, reinforcing the government’s commitment to celebrating sporting excellence and encouraging future achievements in Nigerian sports.
