Thomas Tuchel plays down withdrawal of Saka, Rice, others from England squad

Thomas Tuchel says he holds no anger towards players who have withdrawn from the England national team squad ahead of Tuesday’s friendly against Japan national team.

Several senior players, including Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, and John Stones, have pulled out following Friday’s 1-1 draw with Uruguay national team.

Tuchel accepts situation

The England manager admitted disappointment but stressed the withdrawals are understandable given the demands on players at this stage of the season.

“I’m disappointed, but not with the players – with the fact we want to have everyone in good spirits and health,” Tuchel said.

“It’s the reality of end of the season… the reality of having players in European matches and more than just one competition.”

Tuchel had initially named a 35-man squad and split it across two fixtures, blending fringe and regular players as part of his preparation strategy.

Focus shifts to World Cup preparation

The camp represents England’s final gathering before the deadline for naming squads for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026.

Tuchel emphasised the importance of managing player workload, noting some squad members have already exceeded their minutes from last season.

“The players needed and deserved the mental break… It’s disappointing but I’m not upset with the players. I’m not angry,” he added.

England will play additional friendlies against New Zealand and in June before opening their World Cup campaign against Croatia.

Despite the withdrawals, Tuchel highlighted the positive atmosphere within the camp, stating that even injured players remained with the squad for treatment, an indication of strong team spirit ahead of a crucial summer.
