“This is what I could afford” – Doctor laments financial struggle after 10-year medical practice

A Nigerian medical practitioner identified on X as Dr Babatunde has stirred conversations online after speaking about his financial struggles despite spending over a decade in the profession.
In a post shared on the platform formerly known as Twitter, the doctor revealed that after 10 years of practice, he has been unable to significantly improve his financial standing.
He recounted an incident in Abeokuta where his old Honda Accord reportedly broke down, and he was mocked by young men driving a Lexus.
Dr Babatunde reflected on the years of study and financial investment required to become a medical doctor, expressing disappointment that his income has remained largely stagnant since he began practicing.
Doctor laments over struggle
The doctor said his 7th-generation Honda Accord, manufactured between 2003 and 2007, broke down under the hot sun while he was dressed in his work attire.
According to him, some young men in a Lexus laughed at him as he stood by the roadside.
He stated that the incident reflects the broader economic challenges faced by many professionals in the country, particularly those who have spent years investing in their education and careers but have seen little financial progression.
His words …
“10 years as a Medical Doctor in Nigeria.
This is what I could afford.
On this particular day some young boys in a Lexus were laughing at me with my tie under the hot sun of Abeokuta.
There was no way on earth my salary and side hustle could get me another car.
We really need to fix Nigeria for Nigerians not just for a few,” he said.
