“This is the worst injustice” – Late Bilyaminu Bello’s family slams Tinubu pardon for Maryam Sanda

The family of the late Bilyaminu Bello have condemned President Bola Tinubu’s decision to grant clemency to Maryam Sanda, describing it as “the worst possible injustice any family could be made to go through.”

Sanda, who was sentenced to death in 2020 for killing her husband, was among 175 inmates recently pardoned by the President.

In a statement released, the Bello family said the pardon had reopened deep emotional wounds and undone years of legal struggle that had once given them a sense of closure.

They expressed disbelief that someone convicted of such a grave offence could be freed so soon after the courts had upheld her sentence.

In their words, the family said:

“She took his life, and now she walks free as though she merely swatted an insect,” one relative said, adding that the news felt like “reliving the tragedy all over again.”

The family argued that mercy appeared to have been shown only to the convict, not to those who lost a loved one.

Public opinion has remained divided. While some Nigerians see the pardon as an act of compassion, others regard it as a troubling precedent that undermines confidence in the justice system.

For the Bello family, however, the pain remains fresh. “We believe God’s justice cannot be pardoned,” they said quietly, “but this decision has left our hearts broken once again.”
