“They were Fulani but also spoke Igbo” – Kidnap survivor shares terrifying 4-day encounter on Enugu highway

A young man who survived a recent kidnapping along the Ugwogo Nike–Opi–Nsukka Road in Enugu State has shared a chilling account of his four days in captivity, exposing how criminal gangs operate along the busy highway.

In a Facebook post shared by Sen. Chijinkem Ugwuanyi, the victim, identified as Peter, said he was abducted around 5pm on November 29, 2025, near the last police checkpoint before Ugwogo Roundabout while travelling from Nsukka to Enugu.

According to Peter, the attack began suddenly when gunmen opened fire from both ends of the road, forcing vehicles to crash into one another. He fled into the bush but was intercepted near a Scripture Union building close to Camp of Grace.

“I heard a loud ‘heey!’ with a gun pointed at me and I was ordered to lie down. At that point, I resigned to fate,” he recalled.

Peter was forced to join other captives and trekked through bushes and farmlands in what he described as a “four-day nomadic lifestyle.” He said the gang was made up of 11 armed men carrying AK-47 rifles and other weapons.

Describing their leader, Peter said:

“He was a mid-sized man whose voice carried authority. He coordinated everything and spoke fluent English, Pidgin, Fulfulde and Igbo.”

The kidnappers constantly moved to avoid security forces, feeding captives only once a day and forcing them to carry their supplies.

While in captivity, Peter said the gang carried out at least two more attacks on the same road, bringing in additional victims.

He warned motorists to avoid the route in the late afternoon and evening, advising that 9am to 1pm appears relatively safer, he also urged families of victims to remain calm during ransom negotiations.

Following his release, Peter expressed gratitude to God and everyone who supported him, as his account has once again sparked public concern over rising insecurity on Enugu highways.
