“The moment you start looking like you’ve made it, people remember you” — lady recounts post-relocation experience

A lady has sparked conversations online after sharing her experience of how people’s attitudes towards her changed after she relocated abroad.
Social media reactions trail viral post
The post, which surfaced on social media on Tuesday, detailed how acquaintances who once ignored her suddenly became friendly once her lifestyle appeared more appealing online.
The lady, whose identity was not disclosed, explained that her experience highlights a broader social behaviour tied to perceived success and visibility.
“I actually learnt this thing when I left Nigeria. I honestly can’t count how many people tried to befriend me since then. There is this girl I went to secondary school with and few years ago I used to admire her a lot. She always looked like she had it all figured out, the outfits, the pictures, the confidence, a standard Instagram hot babe. I won’t lie, I used to envy her a little,” she said.
Experience reflects growing trend
She further narrated how her previous attempts to connect with the same individual were ignored, only for the dynamic to change after her relocation became public knowledge online.
“I used to like her posts, drop comments, even reached out once to check on her. She saw it and said nothing. Left on read. Life moved on. Now she sees my posts, now she likes them, now she messages first. It made me realise something a lot of people don’t like to admit: the moment you start looking like you’ve made it, people remember you,” she added.
Similar sentiments have trended in recent years, with many Nigerians sharing stories of changed relationships after relocating abroad.
