“The confidence of some Fulani herders is alarming” — Fulani lady laments

A Fulani woman has sparked conversations online after sharing claims about rising tensions between farmers and herders in parts of Nigeria, citing incidents of alleged farm destruction and confrontations.

Her remarks, posted on social media, come amid renewed concerns over clashes between farming communities and pastoralists, particularly in rural areas.

The account references a reported incident linked to the Marhaba attack, where disputes between locals and herders allegedly escalated into violence, reflecting broader security challenges tied to land use and grazing.

Allegations of farm encroachment

Narrating the situation, the woman said: “The rate at which some Fulani people are so confident is alarming. How can a Fulani man enter someone’s compound, see a beautiful tree, cut it down, and feed it to his cows? When the woman questioned him, he said ‘why not? my cows are hungry.’ She asked him to leave, he refused. Even the vigilante told him to go, he still refused, until things escalated and he was shot. That incident allegedly led to retaliation in the Marhaba attack.”

Growing concerns over clashes

She further cited similar experiences shared by others, pointing to recurring disputes over farmland.

A friend of mine said when he planted sweet potatoes, Fulani herders would bring their cows to eat the leaves. He fenced his house, yet they still came knocking, asking him to open the gate so their cows could feed,” she added.

The claims echo previous reports of farmer-herder conflicts across Nigeria, including deadly clashes recorded in states like Benue and Plateau in recent years.
