Tears flow as El-Rufai loses mother amid detention
Condolences pour in for former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, following the passing of his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai.
This comes amid his detention over corruption and money laundering charges.
Nasir El-Rufai Loses Mother
Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, son of the former governor and lawmaker representing Kaduna North Federal Constituency, announced her passing on X (formerly Twitter).
According to him, she passed away a few hours ago, with the circumstances surrounding her demise undisclosed.

I would like to inform the public of the demise of my Grandmother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai who passed away a few hours ago. She is the biological mother of our father, Mallam Nasir @elrufai. We are grateful for the life she lived and may Allah SWT bless her gentle soul. May He bless the soul of the parents we have lost. On behalf of our family, we seek your prayers. Thank you.
Notably, Nasir El-Rufai has been in detention since February 16, 2026, over alleged corruption-related offenses.
He was initially arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and re-arrested by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
However, ICPC has clarified that El-Rufai’s detention is lawful, citing a court-authorized remand order dated March 5, 2026.
Meanwhile, the commission is investigating allegations of money laundering and abuse of office against him.
