Team Nigeria wins gold after outstanding performance at 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup in China
Team Nigeria has emerged as the gold award winner in the middle school group category at the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup held in Shanghai, China, earning global recognition for the country’s young academic talents.
The four-member team, made up of Adeolu Oluwadamilola Oreofe, Abdurrahman Yusuf, Chinedu Okediachi and Maryam Yusuf, competed against students from Asia, Africa, the United States, China and Canada during the competition, which took place from July 14 to 19.
Their victory has attracted widespread attention, with many Nigerians celebrating the students’ impressive achievement on the international stage.
Nigeria shines on global stage
The Nigeria Spelling Bee announced the victory in a post shared on its official Facebook page.
The organisers said, “Team Nigeria has won the Gold Award in the Middle School Group Category at the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup in Shanghai, China.”
Before the tournament, the organisers had described the Nigerian representatives as “brilliant, articulate and exceptional“, expressing confidence in their ability to compete among the world’s best young spellers.
They also noted that the team’s journey began at the Nigeria Spelling Bee before progressing to the African Spelling Bee Championship in Harare, Zimbabwe, where they earned the opportunity to represent the continent at the global competition.
Achievement sparks celebration
The organisers described the victory as a remarkable milestone that reflects the team’s dedication, resilience and commitment to academic excellence.
Meanwhile, the management of Ar-Raheem International College also celebrated the success, revealing that two of its students were among the four Nigerians who secured the gold award.
The achievement has been hailed as another positive moment for Nigeria’s education sector, with many hoping it will inspire more young students to pursue academic excellence and confidently compete on the global stage.
