Tanzania removes Nigerians from referred visa list, announces new travel process
Tanzania has removed Nigerian passport holders from its referred visa category, meaning Nigerians travelling to the country will no longer face the additional referral clearance previously required.
The change took effect immediately following amendments published in Government Gazette No. 246 of 2026 and announced by the Tanzania Immigration Services Department in a public notice dated September 25, 2026.

According to the department, Nigerian nationals travelling to Tanzania will now follow the country’s standard visa application procedures.
What Nigerians can now do
1. Apply through the standard visa process: Nigerians can submit visa applications through Tanzania’s official online immigration portal.
2. Avoid the additional referral clearance: Nigerian travellers are no longer subject to the extra approval process that previously applied to nationals in the referred visa category.
3. Apply through designated entry points: The revised process also allows applicants to use designated entry points where applicable.
Under the previous referral system, applicants were required to obtain approval before travelling and were advised to submit their applications at least two months ahead of their intended travel date.
The latest development was announced by the Immigration Services Department’s Chief Spokesperson, ACI Paul J. Mselle.
However, the change does not mean Nigerians can travel to Tanzania without a visa. Where a visa is required, travellers must still obtain approval under the country’s standard procedures.
