Super Eagles’ Nwabali apologises after World Cup Playoff loss to DR Congo
Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has expressed regret to Nigerians following Nigeria’s dramatic 4–3 penalty shootout loss to DR Congo in the African playoff final for the 2026 World Cup.
The match ended 1–1 after extra time, sending the game to penalties where DR Congo emerged victorious.
Despite saving two penalties, Nwabali’s heroics were not enough to counter misses from Calvin Bassey, Moses Simon, and Semi Ajayi.
DR Congo captain Chancel Mbemba scored the decisive penalty, sending his team into the intercontinental playoffs.

“Our best wasn’t enough, and we take full responsibility. We gave everything for the badge,” Nwabali wrote on Instagram after the match.
Heartbreak for Nigerian fans
In his post, Nwabali acknowledged his understanding of fans’ disappointment, revealing that he was once a Super Eagles supporter himself.
“I know how it feels giving you a disappointing night.” he added, emphasising the emotional toll of the defeat.
The loss ends Nigeria’s hopes of direct qualification for the 2026 World Cup, leaving the team and fans reflecting on missed opportunities.
Next steps for the Super Eagles
With the World Cup ticket slipping away, attention now turns to regrouping for future qualifiers.
Nwabali and his teammates are expected to return to domestic and international duties while preparing for upcoming competitions.
