“Submission is both ways, not one-sided” — Women spark debate on relationships

A viral Instagram Live video has sparked conversation online after two women shared differing views on submission in relationships, challenging traditional gender expectations and prompting debate about partnership and equality.
Modern women and submission: Where the debate begins
The first speaker argued that the issue is not women refusing to submit, but how submission is often misunderstood and applied unevenly in modern relationships.
“Women, I don’t believe we have a problem with submission. It’s the way you people understand submission…We are equal when it comes to expenses, but in decision-making, my brain shuts down as a woman. Only your brain works. That’s where the disparity is.”
She added that when a man supports his partner emotionally and fulfills his responsibilities, the relationship flows smoothly.
Partnership or power struggle? Women speak out
The second speaker offered a contrasting perspective. She stressed that submission should be mutual and warned against one-sided expectations.
“You can’t tell me that you are the head and do whatever you feel like doing, then come back and expect me to just listen. Submission is both ways…If you do what you want, then I’m a slave, not a wife or partner.”
The discussion, which lasted just under two minutes, touched on partnership, freedom, and respect in modern relationships.
The video ends abruptly but has since circulated widely on social media, sparking debates about traditional versus modern dynamics in romantic partnerships.
The conversation reflects broader discussions on gender roles in Nigeria and beyond, with social media users weighing in on whether mutual respect and equality can coexist with traditional notions of submission.
