“Stop visiting Lagos, go to Uyo, Abuja, Ibadan” — Media personality Solomon Buchi advises foreigners

Media personality Solomon Buchi has advised foreign visitors seeking an authentic Nigerian experience to look beyond Lagos and explore other parts of the country.

In a video shared online, Buchi argued that Lagos has become the default destination for many international visitors, despite Nigeria having several cities with rich culture, beautiful scenery and unique experiences to offer.

Buchi urges tourists to consider other Nigerian cities

Buchi specifically urged foreigners, regardless of their nationality, to reconsider making Lagos their primary destination when visiting Nigeria.

“Stop visiting Lagos if you are a non-Nigerian and you want to experience Nigeria in its truest, most beautiful form. Stop visiting Lagos. If you’re Caucasian, Chinese, Asian, whatever you are, stop going to Lagos.”

The media personality criticised what he described as the excessive focus on nightlife and entertainment in Lagos. He argued that the city’s loud and fast-paced lifestyle does not fully represent Nigeria’s diversity.

“The only thing you can get out of Lagos is begging, clubbing, fake life, and a den of adulterers and fornicators. There is nothing there apart from all the loudness and madness.”

His remarks are likely to generate mixed reactions, particularly among Lagos residents and those who consider the commercial hub one of Nigeria’s most vibrant tourist destinations.

Uyo, Abuja, Calabar and Jos among his recommendations

Rather than focusing on Lagos, Buchi encouraged visitors to explore cities across Nigeria’s different regions.

“There are so many places in Nigeria that you can visit and have a good time. Go to Uyo a very serene city. Go to Abuja, a very beautiful place. Even go to Ibadan, Oyo state.”

He also highlighted Calabar, Jos, Taraba, Kano, Yola and Bauchi as destinations capable of offering visitors a different perspective of Nigeria.

According to Buchi, these locations provide opportunities to experience local food, traditional cultures, quieter environments and distinctive landscapes.

“Good food, rural areas, rustic city vibe, beautiful. Go to Calabar. Go to Jos in Plateau State. Go to Taraba. Go to Kano. Go to Yola.”

‘There are many beautiful places in Nigeria’

Buchi maintained that Nigeria’s tourism potential extends far beyond its largest commercial city, insisting that visitors could enjoy more authentic cultural experiences elsewhere.

“There are so many. Go to Bauchi. There are so many beautiful places in Nigeria that is not Lagos.”

He further complained that many foreigners repeatedly choose Lagos as their first destination, which, according to him, limits their understanding of the country’s diversity.

“The problem is that every time you guys go to Nigeria, you go to Lagos. There is nothing in Lagos.”

Buchi particularly advised visitors interested in Yoruba culture to consider Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, rather than Lagos.

“Even if you really want to experience the Yoruba culture, like I said, go to Ibadan.”

He concluded by encouraging tourists to broaden their travel plans and experience Nigeria’s diverse people, food and cultural heritage.

“Go to other places in Nigeria. The people are nicer. The food is better. There is so much culture and trust me, it’s not smelling there. The water is also clean.”
