‘Stop hating’ – Infantino hits back at FIFA critics after World Cup
FIFA president Gianni Infantino has defended his leadership and the 2026 FIFA World Cup, urging critics to “reflect, meditate, pray or watch a football match” instead of spreading what he described as “hate and false rumours.”
Infantino made the remarks in a lengthy post on Instagram, where he praised the tournament’s success while dismissing criticism surrounding its organisation and governance.
Infantino defends tournament
The FIFA president said the World Cup showcased football’s ability to unite people across the globe and insisted the competition was a positive experience.
“To those spending their time and energy hating us, please take a moment to reflect, meditate, pray or watch a football match and truly observe the faces, the eyes, the emotions.
He added that the tournament demonstrated “humanity at its best” and claimed it delivered “100% safety and security, only joy and happiness.”
Infantino also defended FIFA’s handling of Iran’s participation, saying the governing body had worked to ensure the country’s involvement went ahead without conflict.
“Our world needs love, not hate; tolerance, not division; celebration, not mourning.”
Controversies overshadow tournament
Despite Infantino’s comments, the tournament was marked by several controversies.
Iran head coach Amir Ghalenoei had earlier described his team as the “most oppressed” at the World Cup after players and staff reportedly faced visa delays and travel restrictions.
Supporters from several countries were also affected by immigration policies, while FIFA continues to investigate incidents involving Argentina following the World Cup final, including post-match altercations and allegations of racist abuse.
The governing body has also faced criticism over disciplinary decisions, particularly after suspending the ban imposed on United States forward Folarin Balogun ahead of the round of 16.
Infantino, however, defended FIFA’s decisions and urged detractors to focus on the positive impact of the competition.
