“Squatting is best for me” – Lady begs hospitals to let pregnant women choose their delivery position

A Nigerian lady has sparked discussion online after sharing her childbirth experience and calling for more flexibility in delivery positions for pregnant women.

The story, shared on Facebook by Miracle Oluchukwu Simon, highlights the physical challenges many women face during labour.

Difficulty Using the Delivery Bed

According to the young woman, she found it extremely difficult to climb onto and use the delivery bed while in active labour.

She explained that her first childbirth experience on the bed was uncomfortable and made it harder for her to push.

She said: “When I was in labour and wanted to give birth, the midwife asked me to climb on top the delivery bed. I begged her to let me lie on the floor and give birth because I found it difficult to use the delivery bed.”

Comparing Two Childbirth Experiences

The lady revealed that during her second pregnancy, she was more comfortable delivering on the floor, which she felt made the process easier and less stressful.

“During my first pregnancy, I used the bed and it was very uncomfortable and difficult for me to push out my baby. In my second pregnancy, I lay on the floor and it was very easy and comfortable for me to deliver my baby.”

Despite her preference, she said the midwife insisted she return to the delivery bed during her most recent labour.

“So, I begged the midwife to allow me to stay on the floor and give birth, but she refused. Climbing on top of that bed when labour is intense is very difficult, and even lying down while giving birth is not easy at all.”

Call for Patient-Centred Care

The woman used her experience to advocate for pregnant women to be given more say in choosing delivery positions that suit their comfort and physical needs.

“I wish they would ask pregnant women the position they prefer to give birth. Squatting is the best for me abeg. Imagine laying down to push a whole human being, but at the end of the day, God made it easy for me.”

She also offered words of encouragement to expectant mothers, expressing hope for smoother delivery experiences.

“To every pregnant woman, God will make it easier for you on your delivery day amen…”

Her story has since generated reactions online, with many women sharing similar experiences.
