Solanke brilliance rescues Tottenham in Man City title blow

Dominic Solanke inspired a remarkable Tottenham Hotspur comeback as Spurs recovered from two goals down to draw with Manchester City, dealing a significant hit to City’s Premier League title ambitions.

Manchester City were dominant for large spells, particularly in the first half, but Spurs rallied after the break to overturn a bleak outlook and secure a point.

City dominance before the break

City were firmly in control in the opening period. Rayan Cherki opened the scoring after being allowed to drive forward unchecked, firing a low shot beyond Guglielmo Vicario.

The visitors continued to dictate proceedings, with Cherki later going close again before City doubled their lead just before half-time.

A poor clearance from Radu Dragusin fell to Rodri, who released Bernardo Silva. The midfielder then slipped in Antoine Semenyo, who finished calmly to cap a dominant first-half performance.

Spurs were booed off at the interval after being comprehensively outplayed.

Spurs find a response

Tottenham showed greater urgency after the restart and began to apply pressure.

Gianluigi Donnarumma was forced into a fine save to deny Destiny Udogie before Spurs finally found a way back into the contest.

Solanke pulled one back in scrappy fashion, a goal that City contested amid claims of a foul on Marc Guehi. The strike, however, shifted things and lifted the home side.

Solanke moment of magic

The equaliser was the highlight of the contest. Showing sharp awareness and technique, Solanke produced an improvised scorpion kick to turn Conor Gallagher’s cross, delivered slightly behind him, past Donnarumma and into the net.

The draw leaves Manchester City six points adrift of league leaders Arsenal, while Spurs earn rare home praise this season for a comeback that looked highly unlikely at half-time.
