Smoke rises over Anwase as bandits strike again in Benue

Anwase village in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State came under attack on Friday, February 7, 2026, when suspected bandits torched at least 11 homes.

Swift intervention by security operatives prevented any deaths, though several residents suffered minor injuries.

Local authorities said the attackers arrived around midday, causing panic as villagers fled their homes.

It happened so quickly,” said one resident. “We ran for our lives as the houses went up in flames. Thank God the security men were nearby.”

The bandits reportedly retreated after encountering security patrols initially deployed to the nearby Abande community, which had been attacked earlier in the week, resulting in six deaths, including a mobile police officer.

Lawrence Akerigbe, a former councillor, said repeated attacks have left the local population deeply unsettled.

Anwase has seen violence before, including a deadly raid on Christmas Day 2024 that killed more than 28 people. Families here live in fear,” he said.

Authorities warn that the pattern of attacks across Kwande Local Government continues to threaten lives and property, with at least 76 people reported killed in the area over the past two years.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant as security forces increase patrols.
