Sheffield United battle Coventry, Valencia for Onyeka signature
Sheffield United have emerged as the latest club to express interest in Brentford midfielder Frank Onyeka, joining a growing list of suitors monitoring the Nigeria international’s situation ahead of the next transfer window.
The 28-year-old is understood to be available, with Brentford open to sanctioning a move after Onyeka slipped down the pecking order this season.
He has yet to make a Premier League start in the current campaign, raising questions about his long-term role at the club.
Limited role at Brentford
Onyeka joined Brentford from Danish side FC Midtjylland in 2021 and has since made 87 appearances across all competitions.
Known for his energy, ball-winning ability and tactical discipline, he played a key role during Brentford’s early Premier League seasons.
However, his influence has waned over the past year. He spent last season on loan at Bundesliga side FC Augsburg and has struggled to regain regular minutes since returning to west London, making his potential departure increasingly likely.
Championship clubs show interest
According to reports, Sheffield United have made enquiries about the possibility of signing Onyeka, viewing him as a player who could add top-flight experience and steel to their midfield.
The Blades are not alone, with Birmingham City and Coventry City also credited with interest.
For Championship clubs, Onyeka would represent a high-calibre acquisition, given his Premier League and international pedigree. His physicality and work rate are seen as attributes that could translate effectively to a promotion push.
Valencia monitoring situation
Interest is not limited to England. Spanish side Valencia are also believed to be tracking Onyeka’s availability, potentially offering him a route back into top-flight European football should a deal materialise.
Brentford’s stance appears flexible. The club are reportedly open to a loan arrangement that includes an obligation or option to buy, particularly if a Championship side secures promotion. A permanent transfer is also on the table if their valuation is met.
