“She broke down and refused to attend my graduation” — Man recounts worst thing family member did to him

A man has shared an emotional story about a family incident that unfolded after he received his West African Examinations Council (WAEC) results, revealing how his academic success unexpectedly strained his relationship with an older cousin who had been living with his family.
Cousin’s reaction shocks family
According to the man, his cousin, who was seven years older than him and had moved from their village to stay with his family while preparing for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination, had been studying alongside him during his Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination preparations.
He explained that he often helped her with past questions and revision sessions, and was genuinely happy when she eventually passed JAMB.
He recalled, “When my WAEC result came out and I cleared everything, I was excited and showing everyone. But immediately I showed her, she stood up and left the sitting room. The next thing we saw, she was in one corner crying, not tears of joy — real crying.”
Graduation day overshadowed by tension
The man said the incident happened on the same day as his graduation ceremony, which his cousin had initially planned to attend.
Despite being fully dressed for the event, she reportedly refused to go with the family after seeing his results and declined to explain the reason for her reaction.
He added, “She had already dressed up to go with us, but after seeing my result, she said she was not going again. No matter how much we asked, she refused to explain why she was crying.”
The situation left the household unsettled, and his mother eventually arranged for the cousin to return to the village the following week.
The story has since sparked conversations online about jealousy, academic pressure, and the emotional struggles young people face when comparing their progress with that of others.
