Seyi Makinde (born December 25, 1967) is a Nigerian engineer, businessman, and politician who has served as governor of Oyo State since 2019.
He is an engineer with expertise in fluid and gas metering. He is the group managing director of Nigeria’s indigenous oil and gas company, Makon Group Limited.
He founded his first oil and gas private company, Makon Engineering and Technical Services (METS), at the age of 29 in 1997, following years of work experience with worldwide oil and gas firms. Makinde ran for governor of Oyo State on the Social Democratic Party (SDP) platform in 2015, he lost.

Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde was born on December 25, 1967, to the late Pa Olatubosun Makinde, a well-known educator and accountant, and Madam Abigail Makinde of Aigbofa Compound in Oja’ba, Ibadan. He is the family’s third child. Makinde began his schooling at St. Paul Primary School in Yemetu, Ibadan, and finished it there.
He completed his secondary education at the Bishop Phillips Academy in Monatan, Ibadan. In 1985, he enrolled at the University of Lagos (Unilag), where he earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
Oluwaseyi was trained in the Safety Shutdown System at Industrial Control Services in Houston, Texas, in 1998, and in Analytical Competence for Managing Operations at Lagos Business School (now Pan Atlantic University) in 1999.
He acquired automation training in 2000. In 2002, he attended Jiskoot Auto Control Training Centre in Kent, England, to study Fundamentals of Crude Sampling. In 2005, he studied Understanding and Solving Complex Business Problems at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States.
Career
Makinde completed his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) with Nigeria’s Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), where he later worked as a pupil engineer.
Between 1990 and 1992, he worked in a variety of capacities, overseeing and participating in a number of major initiatives. He worked as a Field Engineer (Eket operations) at Rebold International Limited from 1992 to 1997 before becoming Field Manager in 1995.
Makinde founded Makon Engineering and Technical Services Limited (METS) in 1997, after working as an Engineering Manager for major international oil and gas corporations (IOCs) for five years (1992-1997).
He is currently the group managing director of the Makon Group of Companies. Makinde is a member of several national and international professional bodies, including the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), the Council for Regulations of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), the Oil and Gas Design Engineers of Nigeria (OGDEN), the International Society of Automation (ISA), the Institute of Measurement and Control UK, and the American Measurement Institute (AMI).
Seyi Makinde ran for the Oyo South Senatorial seat on the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) platform in 2007, but was defeated by Kamoru Adedibu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Makinde was undeterred by his first failed attempt, and in 2010, he ran for the Oyo South 2011 Senatorial seat under the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, but was defeated in the primary by the incumbent Oyo South Senator.
Makinde ran for governor of Oyo State on the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) ticket in 2014 and 2015. In December 2014, following the party’s primary election, he was denied the governorship nomination.
Makinde, on the other hand, remained committed to his goal and joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP), where he competed for Oyo State’s 2015 SDP gubernatorial candidate, finishing third with over 50,000 votes.
In September 2017, PDP Caretaker National Chairman Senator Ahmed Makarfi paid him a visit in Ibadan, and after extensive, deep, and wide consultations with National Leaders, Oyo State leaders and elders of the Social Democratic Party, and a cross-section of Oyo State’s strategic partners, Engineer Seyi Makinde rejoined his former political party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
He stated that his decision to join the PDP was not for personal gain, but for the development of the state by finding long-term answers to the state’s numerous difficulties.
On September 29, 2018, Makinde emerged as the gubernatorial candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2019 general elections in Oyo State, after polling 2772 votes at the primary election that took place at Liberty Stadium, Oke-Ado in Ibadan.
On March 9, 2019, Makinde received 515,621 votes, surpassing his nearest challenger, Adebayo Adelabu of the All Progressives Party, who received 357,982 votes. The All Progressives Congress (APC) in the General Elections.
Makinde was elected Governor of Oyo State in the 2019 Gubernatorial elections, which took place on March 9, 2019. On May 29, 2019, Makinde was sworn in as the 28th Executive Governor of Oyo State. Makinde succeeds Late Senator Abiola Ajimobi after eight years in service.
On April 7, 2022, Makinde expressed his decision to run for another four years, as urged by the good people of Oyo State following his ground-breaking achievements since resuming office in 2019.
Makinde contested the 2023 general election in his campaign for reelection as the governor of Oyo state on March 18, and he won the election earning the most votes to beat his closest competitor Teslim Folarin of the All Progressive Congress (APC), and Adebayo Adelabu of Accord.
On March 19, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) pronounced him the winner and governor-elect of Oyo state after he fulfilled and satisfied all of the law’s conditions.
