Seven dogs escape meat trade, travel 17 km home to respective owners

Seven dogs in Jilin, China, have captured hearts online after escaping an illegal transport truck and travelling 17 km to return to their owners.

The group, which included a Corgi, Golden Retrievers, Labradors, Pekinese, and an injured German Shepherd, managed to navigate highways and open fields over two days without separating.

A video recorded on March 16 by a local man, surnamed Lu, showed the Corgi leading the pack while frequently turning back to check on the others.

They resemble a band of little brothers in distress, moving in unison – nothing like stray dogs,” Lu told Dahe Daily, highlighting the dogs’ coordination and care for each other.

Rescue and reunion

Despite initial attempts to guide them, the dogs ignored Lu’s calls. Volunteers and even a drone were mobilised to ensure their safety.

By March 19, all seven dogs had been reunited with their owners from three different households.

One owner expressed relief, saying, “We are so lucky they came back, not to be eaten.” Another praised the Corgi, calling it clever and resourceful for leading the journey.

The story has sparked discussions online, with users admiring the dogs’ loyalty and intelligence.

Cases like this underline the risks of pet theft for meat trade in northern China, despite legal penalties and ongoing efforts by authorities.
