McTominay was handed a start after his super sub appearance against Cyprus on Saturday, March 25, when he scored twice in the last six minutes of play to give the Scots a 3-0 win.

The Steve Clarke-led team started like a side hungry for a statement victory and they were ahead after seven minutes. Andy Robertson’s pressure forced Spurs’ Pedro Porro into a slip and the skipper needed no second invite to nick the ball and cut back perfectly for McTominay to side-foot home past Kepa from 10 yards.

McTominay got his second goal just seven minutes into the game. He had Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney to thank for it. The Arsenal defender nabbed the ball ten yards in his half and put on the burners, racing up the wing past two Spanish markers.

His cross to the six-yard box was only half cleared by David Garcia and McTominay sprinted onto the loose ball and smashed it home.

It was Scotland’s first win against the Spaniards since 1984 when Jock Stein’s side won 3-1 and probably their best result since beating France in 2007.

To put the win into context, Spain has suffered only one defeat in their last 38 Euro qualifiers and only two defeats in World Cup qualifiers since 2006.
