Salah insists Egypt not among top favourites for AFCON 2025

Egypt captain Mohamed Salah has played down expectations around the Pharaohs’ chances at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, urging caution as the team prepares for the quarterfinal stage.

Speaking after Egypt’s hard-earned 3-1 extra-time victory over Benin Republic in the Round of 16, Salah stressed that the current squad should not be viewed as outright contenders for the title.

Salah plays down title talk

“I don’t think Egypt is the number one candidate to win the title, because most of our players play in the local league. We’ll see how far we can go in this tournament,” the Liverpool forward said.

His comments has been taken as a deliberate attempt to manage expectations, particularly given Egypt’s reliance on domestically based players rather than a squad dominated by Europe-based stars.

Decisive contribution against Benin

The Round of 16 clash proved demanding, requiring extra time before Egypt could seal progression.

Salah delivered when it mattered most, scoring the decisive goal to underline his importance in high-pressure moments.

Quarterfinal outlook

Seven-time champions Egypt will now face the winner of the quarterfinal tie between Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso.

Defending champions Ivory Coast remain one of the tournament’s strongest sides, while Burkina Faso have impressed with a resilient campaign.

Head coach Hossam Hassan echoed Salah’s stance, emphasizing respect for all opponents and the need to stay focused as Egypt pursue a record-extending eighth AFCON title.

Salah’s measured messaging is expected to ease pressure and help the Pharaohs approach the latter stages with calm.
