Saka explains why he took penalty ahead of Gyokeres

Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka has revealed why he stepped up to take the penalty in their 2-0 victory over West Ham instead of Viktor Gyokeres.

No regrets over penalty decision

The Gunners were awarded a spot-kick after Jurrien Timber was fouled inside the box, and Saka made no hesitation in claiming the ball before converting to double Arsenal’s lead.

Declan Rice had earlier opened the scoring to send Mikel Arteta’s men to the top of the Premier League table.

Asked if there was any debate over who would take the penalty, Saka said: “No, when I grabbed the ball I wanted to take it, so that’s what my thoughts were at that moment. Erm, we’ll keep our conversations in the house for now, I won’t say much more!”

Backs Gyokeres despite missed opportunity

Saka also praised Gyokeres, who had previously taken a penalty in the win over Leeds United, emphasizing his contribution to the team despite not scoring against West Ham.

“I think Viktor’s playing really, really well. There’s no doubt he’s going to score goals,” Saka said. “He’s a big part of the reason why we’re winning these games.

“His goals will come. We believe in him, and he’s still up, still happy, and still giving his best every game.”
