During General Sani Abacha’s transition period, Amaechi was appointed State Secretary of the Democratic Party of Nigeria (DPN) in 1996. In 1999, he ran for and won the Rivers State House of Assembly seat.

Following that, he was chosen Chairman of Nigeria’s Conference of Speakers of State Assemblies, demonstrating his expanding importance in Nigerian politics. Rotimi Amaechi ran for Governor of Rivers State in 2007 and won despite significant opposition.
