Real Madrid slam La Liga referees, call Valverde red card in Atletico win ‘a scandal’

Real Madrid have launched a fresh attack on La Liga officiating after Federico Valverde was sent off in their 3-2 derby victory over Atletico Madrid.
Valverde received a straight red card for a challenge on Alex Baena, a decision upheld after a VAR review. The dismissal means the midfielder will miss upcoming domestic fixtures.
Club criticises officiating
Real Madrid strongly opposed the decision, insisting the challenge did not warrant a dismissal.
“This is a scandal, this is a disgrace,” the club said in a statement. “It’s a clear yellow card offense… this can never be a red card.”
They further questioned the use of VAR and suggested inconsistency in officiating standards, continuing their public criticism of refereeing in Spain.

The referee, Jose Luis Munuera Montero, stated in his report that Valverde “kicked an opponent… using excessive force,” which justified the red card under current regulations.
Arbeloa offers measured response
Despite the controversy, Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa struck a more balanced tone, acknowledging the explanation provided by the match official.
“We showed character and mental strength. We had to suffer with one less player,” he said.
“I have a different view of the red card, but I thank Jose Luis for coming to explain to me why he sent him off.”
Valverde had earlier contributed to Madrid’s comeback after Ademola Lookman opened the scoring for Atletico. Goals from Vinicius Junior and Valverde turned the game before Nahuel Molina pulled one back late on.
Suspension confirmed
The red card will see Valverde serve a two-match domestic ban, ruling him out of upcoming La Liga fixtures. However, he remains eligible for Madrid’s UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash against Bayern Munich.
The incident adds further tension to ongoing debates around refereeing standards in La Liga as the title race intensifies.
