PSG boss Luis Enrique adopts rugby tactics to improve team

Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique has revealed that he is adopting a tactical approach inspired by rugby as he looks to sharpen his team’s performances in the new campaign.

The Spaniard, 55, chose to watch the first half of PSG’s 2-0 Ligue 1 win over Lens on Sunday from the press box instead of the touchline, before returning to the technical area after the interval.

His unusual choice of vantage point, he explained, was motivated by observing the way rugby coaches analyse matches.

Inspired by a wider perspective

“For some time now, I’ve been watching rugby coaches who analyse matches from a very different perspective,” Enrique told reporters after the game.

“I like the possibility of seeking that improvement. I wanted to follow the first half from the stands and it’s magnificent. It’s different. I can control everything.”

The former Spain and Barcelona coach said the new method provided him with clearer insight into player performances and tactical balance.

He added: “After that, you can perfectly give the halftime talk because you’ve seen perfectly who played well on the field. We have a lot of direct information.”

Impact on PSG’s performance

The change in perspective appeared to make a difference. PSG registered six more shots in the second half compared to the first, while limiting Lens to no clear chances after the break.

Bradley Barcola struck twice – either side of half-time, to ensure PSG extended their perfect start to the Ligue 1 season and maintained their place at the top of the table.

Enrique, who is still recovering from a recent cycling accident that left him with a fractured collarbone and required emergency surgery, was seen with his arm in a sling during the game.

The manager has not confirmed whether he will repeat the approach regularly, but he suggested it could become part of his strategy moving forward.

PSG face Atalanta in their Champions League opener on Wednesday, where Enrique may again turn to his new rugby-inspired method to gain an edge.
